About: The three-coloured horses from the Tang dynasty (618-907), which were mostly produced as memorials, are a milestone in the Chinese ceramic tradition.

In Tang China, the horse was the emblem of wealth and power. They are meant to embody rank and speed. Some of the most treasured Tang horses were glazed in cobalt blue. Cobalt was a treasured commodity imported from the Middle East; it was more valuable than gold. Its use means the horse was for someone of the highest rank.
